GP-TCM congress

2012-04-16 - 2012-04-18

After the successful completion of the project’s Final Conference in Kerkrade, the public dissemination event “the GP-TCM Congress” took place in Leiden, the Netherlands on 16th – 18th April 2012. The main objective of the Congress was to disseminate the results of the project by bringing together the project partners, external stakeholders and public. After the registration and reception in the Museum Naturalis on 15th April, the Congress started the next day with a presentation of Prof. Jan van der Greef, who showed the importance of a holistic approach using systems biology to study the Chinese medicine. The most important news was that for he and his team in close collaboration with Chinese counterparts have been able for the first time to register a traditional Chinese medicine with the Dutch registration authorities and thus opening the way into Europe! The following lectures dealt with the results of the different work packages of the GP-TCM project. Also a short workshop on “Roadmap to evidence-based traditional medicine” was included in the second day. The Dutch Society against Quackery gave a short presentation on the development of Western medicine, in which at certain time points major shifts in paradigm occurred and asking the question when such changes happened in TCM. A lively discussion followed, from which the consensus seems to be the need for evidence-based medicines. The GP-TCM network is exactly focused on this and particularly on defining the conditions to obtain reliable and reproducible data needed for registration files. This should lead to generally accepted rules for Good Practices. Besides the invited speakers, a series of short lectures and posters around the theme of traditional medicine were presented showing that a new generation of scientists is involved in some exciting aspects of traditional medicine. Besides all the science, there was ample occasion for the more than 130 participants for socialising during the reception in the historical town hall of Leiden and during the beach party in Katwijk. Finally, the Congress Organising Committee thanks again to all the participants and the sponsors for their generous support.

The GP-TCM Final Conference, the GP-TCM Congress and the GP-TCM Research Association were highlighted by the Phoenix TV news (in Chinese):
